Synopsis
Based upon a local legend, Alice Flagg is a new American opera telling the tragic love story of a young aristocratic woman from Murell’s Inlet, South Carolina. The young woman, Alice, falls madly in love with a lumberman by the name of John Braddock, despite his low station. While Alice is more than willing to look past his place in life, her family is not, and as punishment they send her away to Charleston, for boarding school. However, before she leaves, Alice does secretly get engaged to John.
Shortly after arriving in Charleston, Alice is bitten by a mosquito and contracts malaria. This throws her into a state of delirium and her family is quickly notified. She is taken back to Murell’s Inlet, where her family finds her engagement ring, and throws it into the creek. Unfortunately, despite her family’s efforts, she still passes.
The Alice Flagg story has developed over time into one of the most popular ghost stories in the Lowcountry —- second in popularity only to The Grey Man. It is said that Alice’s ghost still haunts the area searching for her ring. She was buried at All Saints Church in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. The legend is that when someone visits the grave, rings and other jewelry will go missing…as if stolen by the ghost of Alice Flagg, still searching for her lost engagement ring.
